SMART CAMPUS INITIATIVES REQUIRE ONGOING FUNDING, HOW IS THIS MANAGED?We recognize the importance of ensuring smart campus initiatives remain viable. We develop financial sustainment programs that take into account government funding programs and commercialization opportunities. We also investigate the reusability of data sets and digital assets to support educational programs and industry engagement.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A SMART CAMPUS PROJECT?The ‘strategy development’ phase, is the first step of a smart campus journey. During this phase, a project team will define the vision for a smart campus and the plan for achieving it. This phase typically takes a few months depending on project complexity and defined requirements. Long-term smart campus initiatives are typically an ongoing journey, rather than a one-off project with a fixed start and end date. However, many initiatives choose to start with limited initial pilot and proof of concept projects that often can commence and complete within twelve months.

HOW DOES A SMART CAMPUS ENSURE DATA PRIVACY AND SECURITY?Privacy and security will be built into the systems from day one. We have extensive experience in designing secure systems and have met stringent privacy and security requirements for a range of government agencies, including cities, utilities, national defence projects and healthcare authorities. When we develop a smart campus, our goal is for it to be recognized as a leader when it comes to data privacy and security.

HOW ARE SMART CAMPUSES FUNDED?We work with partners to develop the business case for smart campus initiatives. This includes an investigation of funding opportunities from academic and industry partners as well as from government sources. These projects involve implementing and conducting cutting-edge research and are often eligible for grants, credits, and other incentives for modernization, digital transformation and sustainability. Whenever we plan a project we also look at the potential to generate new revenue opportunities through smart campus activities, services, and data. This is all in addition to the basic value proposition of a smart campus for increasing operational efficiency and reducing maintenance costs.
